Super subs combine for win at LASK

Third win in third Bundesliga match

It was lower-scoring that usual, but the feeling at the end was juat as wonderful - we won 1-0 on the third ADMIRAL Bundesliga Matchday to remain top of the table with maximum points. LASK Linz pushed us all the way before superb subs Oscar Gloukh and Moussa Yeo combined to win it.

Pepijn Lijnders made five changes to the starting XI after the 3-3 draw at FC Twente – and our new-look side had to find its feet a little. It was clear enough that both teams were going full throttle though.

Around a quarter of an hour had been played when we first seriously tested the Linz target - with Adam Daghim & Co creating several scoring opportunities. A little while later, the hosts had their best phase and Janis Blaswich made a superb save in the 28th minute. It remained an even and entertaining first half, with only one thing lacking - goals.

The second period also started slowly, with some solid attacks here and there but a lack of cutting edge. Lijnders had some aces up his sleeve – going by the names of Gloukh, Bidstrup and Yeo, who came on in the 60th minute and promptly sealed a big away win. The decisive strike came four minutes after they came on. After winning the ball in the box, Gloukh launched a delightful dribble, taking the ball to the byline and cutting back for Yeo to sidefoot the ball at the near post for a 1-0 lead (64')!

The game was not over by a long shot, but all the pressure was suddenly on LASK. After their defeat against Altach last week, they desperately wanted to bounce back, but you can't wish the ball into the net - especially when Kamil Piatkowski is there to launch an astonishing sliding tackle, as he was in the 81st minute – which would have been an equaliser. Both sides went on the attack in the final stages, without a major onslaught coming. There were a few testing efforts, but none that packed a major threat, as the statistics show. While we led the shooting figures with 16-12, our Expected Goals lead of 1.24 to 0.85 was a little less spectacular.

Be it as it may, Yeo's strike was enough to win the difficult away tie - as we took our third win in our third Bundesliga match of the season over the line. We now go as league leaders into the UEFA Champions League play-off tie against FC Dynamo Kyiv, with ticket info available here:

We want to show what we can do - and that's what we are doing right now! It was really good today, as we remained compact and kept a clean sheet - it was an important start against really good opponents, and that was important for us at the back. The coach has faith in me, and it is important to me that I play. I'm delighted!

What a match! It was really hard today, as LASK did really well. We needed a lot of power during the week against Twente, so it was tough today. We did well on the ball and defensively too, keeping a clean sheet - I'm pleased. As substitutes, we wanted to make the difference, and we managed that!
