We took a look at the Swansea City players who could attract transfer interest in January

While the Championship table may not show it, Swansea City have actually made a decent start to the 2024/25 campaign and can feel aggrieved not to be higher up.

Apart from the recent game with Leeds United, Swansea City's defence has been excellent and Luke Williams can be pleased with the way his side have played in most games, despite not always having the results they deserve.

There have been some real standout players in the Swansea side, and with the winter transfer window just around the corner, it feels inevitable that some of them will attract interest come January 1st.

Williams will be concerned that some of his star players could well attract interest when the transfer window opens, and with a small squad anyway, losing key players in January could well be a disaster.

With that in mind, we've taken a look at the transfer concerns that Swansea City face.

Harry Darling's contract situation

Centre-back Harry Darling has been a hugely influential player this season, forming a formidable partnership with Ben Cabango, but the 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Darling joined the Swans from MK Dons in the summer of 2022, but it's fair to say that this season has been his best in a Swansea shirt, despite impressing at times since his arrival.

Swansea are doing their best to thrash out a new deal for Darling, and his centre-park partner Cabango for that matter, but with no deal signed yet, it means there's a risk of him losing in January.

The 25-year-old would improve most Championship defences and teams will surely be keeping tabs on his situation with his deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Bristol City were linked with a late move for him in the summer transfer window, and you feel as if there will be more interest when the January transfer window opens.

Until Darling puts pen-to-paper on a new deal there will always be a chance that he departs in January, and it gives Swansea a real headache.

The situation with Swansea right-back Josh Key is slightly different, and he's contracted until the summer of 2026, but he could well attract transfer interest following some impressive recent performances.

It's clear that it's not gone unnoticed by his manager either, with Williams comparing Key to Gareth Bale recently as he admitted he wants to tie the 24-year-old down to a new contract at the Swansea.com Stadium.

While the Bale comparisons may have raised eyebrows amongst some people, Key is pacy, can beat a man, and he's shown in recent times that he's not afraid to carry the ball into midfield and take shots from range, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he's used further up the pitch in the years to come.

In a recent pre-match press conference, Williams jokingly told a journalist to stop mentioning him, perhaps showing that the Swans boss is worried that teams may be keeping tabs on him if he continues to impress before January.

Swansea have fallen victim to letting contracts run down and losing players for free in recent seasons, with the likes of Ryan Manning and Joel Latibeaudiere leaving on a free in 2023, while they also face a struggle to retain Cabango and Darling, so avoiding the same situation with Key next season will be important.
