Alan Sheehan is seen as increasingly likely to become the next permanent Swansea City manager.

According to Lyall Thomas, the 38-year-old could take over the Swans on a permanent basis after his strong spell in charge as a caretaker.

Sheehan took charge of the team following Luke Williams’ departure in late February, with the side earning five wins from nine games.

The Welsh outfit have yet to make an official decision on an official replacement for Williams, with four fixtures remaining in the campaign.

Alan Sheehan verdict

When asked about hiring Sheehan on a permanent basis, FLW’s Swansea fan pundit Will Hughes believes that the interim boss has done enough to justify the appointment.

While there are certain targets he’d prefer, he’d still rather keep Sheehan in charge instead of bringing in someone like Rob Edwards

“If you’d ask me if he should have the job a couple of weeks ago, it would’ve been a firm no,” Hughes told Football League World.

“But, what I will say, I’m happy I’m not one of the board members of the club at the minute because they have got a massive decision to make.

“Firstly, I just want to say, Alan Sheehan, I do like him a lot, I think he’s a great character, he speaks very well, good knowledge of the game, he is very likable, and I think he’s done a fantastic job since he’s come in.

“The board at the club are going to run out of excuses, and what I mean by that is if they’re looking for excuses to not give him the job they are rapidly running out because the more this goes on there’s no way he can’t have the job.

“For me, I’ve always said if it’s a case of us bringing in, in my opinion, a poorer appointment like maybe a Rob Edwards or a cheap option, I’d be like ‘you may as well keep Alan Sheehan’ because we know what we’re going to get with him.

“But, if we are lining up a really special appointment, I’ve mentioned in the past Eder Sarabia from Elche, Kim Hellberg from Hammarby.

“Of course, there’s no guarantee that they’re going to do well at this level because it is an unforgiving league.

“There’s no guarantee, but he would be an exciting appointment, that’s for sure.

“If the club are lining up a really big appointment, then fair enough, I’ll say ‘great, bring that person in’.

“But if it is someone that’s not a great appointment, or there’s no guarantee they’re going to do well, then by all means keep Alan Sheehan.

“Of course, the next four games I feel are all winnable.

“I don’t feel he should be given the job right now, they should still be waiting until the summer, so we can assess all of our options.

“There’s no saying Alan Sheehan will want to stay, he’s had offers in the past from other clubs, we’re not sure who, who’s to say a club won’t come in and offer him more money and bigger access to funds to bring players in?

“But, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Big appointment needed if not Sheehan

Hughes reiterated his desire to only see a big name alternative to Sheehan, suggesting Swansea are running out of reasons to not appoint the 38-year-old after their recent run of form, which included wins over Sunderland and Middlesbrough, as well as a draw with Leeds United.

“As I’ve said, the people at the top of the club are going to run out of excuses for not appointing him,” he added.

“And if they don’t appoint him, then they’re going to have to ensure that they’ve got a really, really big appointment lined up.

“Because otherwise questions will be asked.

“So, for me, he definitely deserves the job for the job he’s done already, that I can’t deny, and if they gave him the job then fair enough, he’s fully deserved it.

“But, again, I’m eager to see who they potentially have got lined up, who are the potential candidates for the job.”

Swansea are currently 12th in the Championship table, eight points adrift of the play-off places.

Sheehan doing enough to earn the job

Swansea’s performances in recent weeks have been solid since Sheehan came in to replace Williams.

He’s kept the supporters happy, and results against the likes of Sunderland and Middlesbrough have given them reason to be optimistic again.

If there are no big names prepared to come in, then keeping Sheehan for the time being would make a lot of sense.

The final four games will give him an opportunity to further make his case, and the club are best off waiting on a decision at this stage given how little is left in the campaign.
