Sweden international Sofia Jakobsson has joined London City Lionesses on a two-year deal following her departure from San Diego Wave.
Jakobsson has been a national team mainstay since 2011, winning two silver medals at the Olympic Games (2016, 2020) and two bronze medals at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (2011, 2019) among her 157 caps.
“It was time for me to find another place to play,” said Jakobsson upon inking her two-year contract. “I talked with many clubs, but I heard about London City’s plans from the coach and I could see that this is a super interesting project and a great opportunity to make something special together as a group. I have always been in for challenges and I feel that this is a cool challenge and the perfect opportunity to be part of this project.
“I talked a little bit with Kosovare [Asllani] and she told me that Michele Kang’s plans were very interesting. What Michele wants to achieve with this team, and in women’s soccer more generally, is great and she’s doing really positive things for women in sport.
“I’ve been through the whole process of women’s football and I can see that she is making a positive impact. My decision to come here was not just about the football part – it’s also that we’re trying to do great things for women’s sport.”
London City head coach Jocelyn Prêcheur said of her latest signing: “This is the profile of player we needed for so many reasons. First, as a striker, Sofia has characteristics we didn’t have before – she likes to attack the space and dribble a lot.
“She is such a talented player and is someone who we really wanted in our team because she has such great experience. She perfectly understands what it means to perform at a high level and we needed this kind of player to guide the team and help develop our project.
“I’m very happy and proud that we convinced Sofia to join us. I’m sure she will bring her experience, qualities, and professionalism, making her a very good example to follow.”
