Switzerland are through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 following a comfortable 2-0 victory over defending champions Italy in the last 16.

The Swiss side, who rounded off their Group A campaign with a creditable draw against hosts Germany, cruised past Italy and will now face either England or Slovakia in the quarter-finals.

Group A – Matchweek One

Switzerland began the game well and then held on through a resurgence from Hungary before adding some polish to the scoreline through Breel Embolo in injury time.

Group A – Matchweek Two

Switzerland will have been hoping to secure their spot in the knock-out stages against Scotland but in the end the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in Cologne with Xherdan Shaqiri scoring el Nati’s equaliser in the first-half.

Group A – Matchweek Three

Switzerland have presented Germany with a problem over recent years. El Nati have now gone four games unbeaten against die Mannschaft and they almost won this game. Switzerland were able to take the lead against Germany and it looked, for a long period, that they would top Group A after claiming victory. A 92nd minute goal from Niclas Fullkrug gave Germany the advantage and prestige of topping the group.

Round of 16

For the third European Championship in a row, the defending champions fell at the last 16 stage as Italy were comfortably dispatched by Switzerland on Saturday. Italy head home having shipped more goals (5) in four matches at Euro 2024 than the four they conceded across the entire tournament three years ago. The Swiss, who beat France at this stage in 2021, deservedly march on, with either England or Slovakia awaiting them in the last eight.
