Wojciech Szczesny confirmed it would be ‘disrespectful’ not to take Barcelona’s offer into consideration and come out of retirement at Juventus.

The goalkeeper had made it clear he was not particularly eager to hang up his gloves at the age of 34, but when Juve tried and failed to sell him to clubs in Saudi Arabia, he preferred to retire rather than be a weight on the Old Lady’s finances.

Those plans have now changed again with news Barcelona contacted him to replace Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who is out for eight months with a serious knee injury.

Szczesny speaks out on Barcelona approach

“I have great respect for the history of Barcelona, it is one of the best clubs in the world,” Szczesny told Spanish site Sport.

“I understand the difficult situation that has been created after Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s injury and I think it would be disrespectful for me to not consider this option.”

It is widely reported in Spain that the Poland international has agreed personal terms with Barcelona and will put pen to paper this week.

There are still a few legal technicalities to sort out with Juventus, but this is a new and unexpected lease of life in Szczesny’s career.
