In 1974, West Germany played the Netherlands in the World Cup Final.
The whole family got in my dad’s car and off we went from the Grange Estate to Lemington.
The reason?
My oldest brother was married, had a house and a colour TV.
Talk about Return of the Likely Lads.
A COLOUR TV!
Let that sink in.
The whole family supporting the best player in the world, Johan Cruyff, plus it was all in colour.
The garish bright orange entertainers against a black and white machine.
The West Germans with Gerd Muller won but this was not the first disappointment for me.
I had been allowed to stay up late to watch England be defeated by a clown, who was the Polish goalkeeper called Tomaszewski
And so on to a lifetime of football disappointment.
Supporting Newcastle United… where do we start and where do we end?
The torture of knowing that Newcastle are a massive club but with no trophies in more than half a century.
I work with youngsters in London who appear baffled by the fact that I support a team that has won nothing in my lifetime and I am counting down the days to retirement.
The same kids support/follow teams they have no hope of ever seeing live.
This is the crux/irony of this article.
Me and my son were going to games home and away with the expectation of defeat but the glimmer of hope that we might sneak/fluke a win and then be able to hold our heads high. The Benetiz/Steve Bruce FCB era away days at Wolverhampton, Norwich, Southampton etc. and so to today.
A week before the Palace game I am waiting on the music teacher I work with to hopefully sell his season ticket seats at face value, so me and the daft lad can once again get in behind enemy lines.
Bring back paying in at the turnstiles is all I have to say.
