James Tarkowski thundered in a 98th-minute equaliser for Everton as the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park ended in drama.

Everton and Liverpool met at the famous ground for the final time and it was a fitting final chapter in the history books.

The home side took the lead inside 11 minutes through Beto, whose clever run was picked out by Jarrad Branthwaite from a set piece. The forward ghosted in behind to latch onto Branthwaite’s ball and calmly finished past Alisson.

An emotional Everton crowd were in fine voice but the visitors silenced the home fans just five minutes later. Mohamed Salah’s floated delivery was met by Alexis Mac Allister, who flicked brilliantly into the far corner.

There was an old-fashioned feel to the contest with five bookings in the first half alone, while Everton came out after the break on top. Abdoulaye Doucoure headed a great chance wide, before Jack Harrison fluffed his lines when well placed.

However, Liverpool took the lead against the run of play. Curtis Jones’ shot was headed into the path of Mohamed Salah who tucked away his 22nd goal of the Premier League campaign.

Liverpool looked to have done enough but there was one final twist. A loose ball dropped to Tarkowski in the penalty area and the centre-back smashed home spectacularly on the volley to send Goodison Park wild. The goal was given after a check with VAR, before tensions spilled over at the final whistle.

Curtis Jones, Arne Slot and Abdoulaye Doucoure sent off after full-time whistle in Merseyside Derby

Jones took objection to Doucoure’s celebrations in front of the Liverpool fans with both sets of players clashing. Following the melee, Jones, Doucoure and Liverpool boss Arne Slot were all sent off.

The result continues Everton’s strong start under David Moyes with the Toffees now unbeaten in four Premier League games. Liverpool extend their advantage at the top to seven points, though will feel disappointed to have dropped points dramatically late on.
