Unless something remarkable happens between now and the end of play today, James Tavernier is to remain at Rangers, after various media reports ‘confirmed’ the club captain had had talks with some other clubs but decided to stay at Ibrox.
It is alleged Tavernier turned down bigger wages elsewhere to continue on at Rangers, some saying he’s rejected £50,000pw in order to remain Rangers’ RB and captain, despite the huge hype around his potential exit.
We have run an Ibrox Noise poll to gauge fan reaction to this unofficial/official news, and we’ll bring you the results of that later, but ultimately, what does this story mean?
It means, for starters, Dujon Sterling ‘probably’, against the wishes of some Rangers fans, won’t be occupying that RB slot, which Ibrox Noise has explained isn’t his best position anyway.
It also means Rangers will continue to be vulnerable on both channels, with Celtic especially going through Rangers’ flanks like hot butter, Maeda in particular having a field day against Tav and will continue to do so.
Tavernier is reported to have refused to abandon the club in its hour of need – a speck dramatic and slightly overselling his importance, but ultimately the message is clear – James Tavernier is to go nowhere after a summer of intense speculation.
This all follows on of course from the abuse he’s taken, that fan incident at Ibrox especially highlighted in the press, in which a supporter invited him to leave the club in slightly industrial terminology.
But none of it matters, none of the fans who wanted to see the back of him ‘matter’ per se, it is now 99% that Tavernier is going nowhere, but we did have to laugh at one journo who claimed he knew this last week. Funnily enough he did not report it.
Curious.
Either way, Tav will remain whatever you think of him, and it’s (likely) at least another year of his controversial displays at RB.
