The Magpies target four Premier League away wins in a row for the first time since 1996 and Howe has opted to make one change from last weekend's 4-1 defeat against AFC Bournemouth at St. James' Park as Schär replaces Sven Botman, who is named on the bench, at the heart of United's defence.
Martin Dúbravka retains his place in goal although Nick Pope returns to the squad for the first time since sustaining a knee injury in December's 4-2 league defeat at Brentford.
Tino Livramento, who joined Newcastle from Southampton in the summer of 2023, and Lewis Hall occupy the respective defensive flanks while Dan Burn partners Schär at centre-back.
Bruno Guimarães, who scored on his full Magpies debut against Southampton in March 2022, partners Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, who scored the winning goal in the reverse fixture against the Saints on the opening day of the 2024/25 season, in the middle of the park.
Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon will aim to provide attacking support for Alexander Isak, who has scored nine goals in his last eight away fixtures in all competitions for the Magpies.
Miguel Almirón and Joe Willock, both on target in Newcastle's 4-1 away win against Southampton during the 2022/23 season, are both named on the substitutes' bench as well as midfield duo Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley.
Kieran Trippier and Lloyd Kelly, who made his competitive debut for Newcastle in August's 1-0 win against the Saints, also feature on the bench.
