Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is an option to replace Xabi Alonso as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen are conducting their search for a replacement for Alonso, following his decision to leave the German side. Alonso has agreed a deal to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, bringing an end to his history-making spell in Leverkusen.

Cesc Fabregas is understood to be Leverkusen’s leading target to replace Alonso. The Spaniard has impressed in his first management role at Como, leading the newly-promoted side into the top half of Serie A with two games to go. Como do not want to lose Fabregas, while the 38-year-old’s position remains unclear.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has revealed that Fabregas has not yet turned down a move to the Bundesliga.

“No candidate has turned us down at any point in the process,” Rolfes said on Saturday.

“I believe we will wrap this up in May and that we’re in the final stages. It will definitely happen in May.”

Should Fabregas reject the move, Ten Hag is the preferred option for Leverkusen. The Dutchman has been out of work since being sacked at Manchester United in October.

Ten Hag won the League Cup and FA Cup during his two-and-a-half seasons at Old Trafford, but poor Premier League performances saw him dismissed. He previously won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and led the Dutch side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19.
