Chelsea bowed out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2-1 on aggregate to Barcelona in front of 39,398 at Stamford Bridge.

Hannah Hampton had to get down sharply at her near post to save a volley from Caroline Graham Hansen at the second attempt but Barcelona took the lead after 25 minutes, Aitana Bonmati’s shot deflecting of Kadeisha Buchanan and wide of the keeper to find the bottom corner.

Melanie Leupolz hit the Barcelona crossbar with the goal at her mercy, Catarina Macarino forced a save from Cata Coll and Lauren James could  not quite get on the end of a cut-back after Irene Paredes’ backpass fell short.

Sjoeke Nusken hit the outside of the post after James and Ashley Lawrence combined really well, moments later Chelsea were down to ten with a second yellow card for Buchanan for her tackle on Patri Guijarro and still over half-an-hour to play.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd went on a run and got a shot away between defenders but straight at the goalkeeper.

Barcelona were awarded a penalty when Bonmati went down in the box after contact with Lawrence, the decision survived a VAR check and Fridolina Rolfo converted from the spot.

Hampton denied Salma Paralluelo a tap in at the death but time ran out for the Blues.
