Chelsea were impressed by Enzo Maresca winning the Championship title last season with a style of football that offers control according to The Athletic.
Maresca was announced as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor last summer after just one season at Leicester, albeit a successful one.
The 45-year-old penned a five year deal at Stamford Bridge and will be tasked with taking Chelsea back to the Champions League and winning silverware.
Maresca made a brilliant start to the season, with Chelsea playing some of the best football in the league and the Blues found themselves in the title conversation in the build-up to Christmas.
However, after missing the chance to go top following a goalless draw against Everton, the Blues have tumbled down the table and now sit sixth following a run of two wins in their last nine league matches.
Chelsea are said to be happy with the job Maresca is doing, but he will no doubt be under pressure to arrest this alarming slump.

The Blues will apparently conduct a review of Maresca’s performance in the summer of 2026, indicating he will most likely still be in charge next season.
Fans are demanding Champions League football, but Maresca has insisted he wasn’t told that was the target this season.
It’s alarming how big the drop off has been from the start of the season and The Athletic have now reported what initially impressed Chelsea about Maresca.
The report states that Chelsea’s leadership were impressed by the fact Maresca won the Championship with a style of football that balanced chance creation with defensive stability, whilst also offering control.

Chelsea fans will be wondering where that defensive stability is given they haven’t kept a clean sheet in the league since December 22nd and there’s been one clean sheet in the league at Stamford Bridge all season.
Now would be a good time to see that brand of football which impressed Chelsea, starting with the game against Aston Villa on Saturday evening.
