The best value Premier league transfers of the summer

Raheem Sterling to Arsenal (loan)

Arsenal made a late deadline day swoop to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea, after the winger was unceremoniously told that he had not future at Stamford Bridge. The 29-year-old arrives at Arsenal in a relatively risk-free deal and adds important depth to Mikel Arteta’s options.

There’s no loan fee involved, while Chelsea’s desire to offload Sterling means the Blues are prepared to pay the larger share of his wages just to get him out the door. If Arsenal can coax out a version of Sterling that is anything close to the player who averaged 26 goals a season at Manchester City between 2018 and 2020, they’ll have the steal of the summer.

Daichi Kamada to Crystal Palace (free)

Oliver Glasner sought a reunion with a former favourite this summer, landing Daichi Kamada on a free transfer from Lazio.

The Japan international had been an impressive performer in Glasner’s Eintracht Frankfurt team, recording 73 goals and assists in 172 games, but struggled to replicate that form in Serie A.

After leaving Lazio, he’s been snapped up as a free agent and has started impressively in South London. A strong pre-season has been followed with immediate impact, including a first Palace goal in the club’s EFL Cup win over Norwich.

Glasner will hope Kamada can inject some creativity to the side after the sale of Michael Olise.

Federico Chiesa to Liverpool (£10.9m)

Liverpool will see the signing of Federico Chiesa as a coup after agreeing a fee of just £10.9m for the Italy international. Thiago Motta’s decision to sell Chiesa and the player’s expiring contract saw Juventus cash in on the 26-year-old at a knockdown price.

It’s an eye-catching fee for a footballer once regarded as one of Italy’s brightest talents, with Chiesa named in the Team of the Tournament as the Azzurri won Euro 2020. Injuries have impacted his progress, including an ACL, though a return of 10 goals in 37 appearances last season prove his pedigree.

Liverpool are not short of attacking options but felt the price tag was too good to turn down. The Reds will feel this was a punt worth taking.

Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City (free)

Ilkay Gundogan’s circumstantial return to Manchester City is a deal that makes sense for all parties. Barcelona needed to reduce their wage bill to register new signings, Manchester City needed a midfielder, and Gundogan was open to the return.

The German might turn 34 in October but there’s plenty left in the tank of a player who led La Liga for chances created in 2023/24. More than just a romantic reunion, Pep Guardiola has managed to add midfielder already well-versed to his intense demands without spending a penny.

James Ward-Prowse to Nottingham Forest (loan)

West Ham have allowed James Ward-Prowse to move on loan this season, with Nottingham Forest agreeing a deal for the experienced midfielder. A £25m signing just last summer, Ward-Prowse fell out of favour during the second half of last season and has been deemed surplus to requirements by new coach Julen Lopetegui.

Forest have picked up a player rich in Premier League experience and whose numbers were impressive at West Ham last season. The 29-year-old scored seven goals and provided 12 assists across all competitions and could offer huge threat to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Oh, and he’s pretty handy at set-pieces too.
