Sport Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund are set to lose a big chunk of money if they fail to qualify for Europe completely this season.
If Dortmund fails to qualify for the Champions League and Europa League this season, they are set to lose around €30m when it comes to the budget for the team next season. The transfer budget will also take a big hit, and it will mean players must be sold before new ones can be brought in.
To offset this loss, Karim Adeyemi could be sold. The winger nearly left the club in the winter, but decided to stay, Adeyemi could bring in close to €60m. Without a sale, Dortmund would not be able to sign Carney Chukwuemeka permanently as the deal would no longer be financially viable and on top of this, they have already set aside €25m for the permanent signing of Yan Couto.
Missing out on the Champions League will also affect other areas.
In terms of the squad, Dortmund wants to extend Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract. This will be more difficult to finalise if they miss out on the Champions League. While Schlotterbeck also has a clause in his contract that will reduce his wages by 15% if Dortmund fails to qualify.
Dortmund will also lose money from sponsorships. Both Dortmund’s sponsors with Evonik and 1&1 will expire in the summer, and will be difficult to renew without European football, while on top of this there is a clause in the Evonik deal that will halve the money Dortmund will receive if they fail to finish in the top four.
The positive for Dortmund is that they will gain money from the Club World Cup. Die Schwarzgelben is planning for between €30-40m from the summer tournament, but the issue is the majority of the money is already in the squad. However, if Dortmund wins the CWC then they can earn up to €100m.
