The curious case of Barcelona starlet who finds himself in Flick’s squad despite struggles with reserve team

Barcelona’s decision to include Noah Darvich in the squad for the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan has certainly raised eyebrows.
On paper, it may seem surprising to see a player who has struggled for minutes with the reserve team now rubbing shoulders with the first team in such a high-stakes European fixture.
But this move may say more about Hansi Flick’s expectations than Darvich’s current role at Barça Atletic, reports SPORT.
The 18-year-old German is yet to fully adapt to Barcelona youth team’s 4-3-3 system. However, it is interesting to note that even if he is not a starter, Flick seems to see raw attributes that can be moulded at the top level.
Darvich’s sporadic performances have come down more to structural issues than a lack of talent. Still, his technical flashes and creativity have not gone unnoticed.

Flick, on his part, already involved Darvich in pre-season and seems keen to keep him close. This consistent inclusion—even if just as a substitute—may be more about long-term evaluation than immediate impact.
The German coach is likely assessing who can adapt to the senior team’s training demands and grow within a more flexible tactical setup.
This summer will be pivotal for Darvich. The uncertainty surrounding Barça Atletic’s division status next season adds another layer of unpredictability.
If he remains on the periphery at the B team and is not given more concrete chances by the first team, a loan move or even a permanent departure cannot be ruled out.
Still, Flick’s interest might be Darvich’s lifeline. While the German starlet has yet to fully announce himself in Spain, he may find more breathing room and a clearer tactical path under a compatriot who understands his strengths.
If Flick is serious about rejuvenating the squad with versatile, intelligent talent, then Darvich, despite his current reserve status, could quietly be laying the foundation for a breakout campaign.
