The DFL has announced that the Super Cup, which is the traditional season opener, will be renamed to the Franz Beckenbauer Super Super.
The legendary defender died earlier this year and the annual fixture between the Bundesliga champions and DFB Pokal winners will now bear his name. As well as the renaming, the cup will also receive a rebranding with the logo and design surrounding the event to also be changed.
The new changes will be in place from the next edition of the Super Cup, which takes place on the 16th of August 2025.
The tributes for Beckenbauer do not stop there as it was announced earlier this month that the former Bayern Munich defender will have his #5 jersey retired by the club. The Giesing native helped mould Bayern into the Rekordmeister that they are known as today as well as establish them internationally with their three European Cups in a row in the 70s.
Beckenbauer was an integral figure not only to Bayern but to Germany as a whole. On the pitch, he helped Germany win the 1974 World Cup before then leading them to their 1990 triumph in the dugout. Away from the pitch, Beckenbauer was also key in Germany securing the hosting rights for the 2006 World Cup.
