After the takeover of the club the previous year, May 2022 brought a historic occasion for the Magpies' women's side - their first-ever outing at St. James' Park. Alnwick Town were the visitors in this FA Women's National League clash and were duly put to the sword in front of a crowd of over 22,000.

Number nine Katie Barker, still an important part of Becky Langley's squad, wrote her name into the history books by rolling home her team's first goal at the famous stadium, and before the break captain Brooke Cochrane made it two from the penalty spot.

A wonderfuly-taken solo effort from Georgia Gibson - who would become a regular scorer in front of the Gallowgate End - made it three after the restart before Beth Guy's twice-taken penalty wrapped up a landmark win for those in black and white, who were finally able to dream of a more prosperous future.

United were roared on by a crowd of 28,565 in this Adobe Women's FA Cup second round tie - a competition record outside of the final at that stage, and a remarkable feat given Langley's team were still in the fourth tier at this point. "I just want the players to be proud, have their families watching in the crowd and their friends watching, and feel really, really proud to pull on the black and white shirt and play at St. James'," said Langley in the build-up, "and hopefully score at the Gallowgate End like Georgia did last season."

They proved to be prophetic words. Buoyed by their earlier success against Alnwick at the ground, and also the summer news that after a restructuring the team were now under club ownership for the first time in their history, it felt like real momentum was building for the Magpies.

Emily Pierrepoint struck the opener for Barnsley, but it was cancelled out by Gibson's sensational 40-yarder in front of the Gallowgate. The contest was won by a similarly spectacular effort from Sharna Wilkinson, which looped in from long range and sent the hosts through.

Newcastle United Women 6 Bradford City Women 1

Flying high in the FA Women's National League Division One North, this fixture - United's final home game of a successful season - looked like an important one as Newcastle looked to keep their push for promotion to the third tier alive. They trailed local rivals Durham Cestria by six points but with two games in hand, the title race was most definitely on.

This convincing display made this final Tyneside outing of the campaign something of a procession, with Guy and Charlotte Potts both heading home to make it 2-0 at half time. Gibson was at it again after the break, netting her side's third, before a Rachel Lee penalty and further efforts from Guy and Potts made it six. Charlie Ramsden's consolation for the Bantams at 5-0 counted for nothing.

The Magpies would go on to pip Cestria on the final day of the season after a 2-0 win at Barnsley, securing the first of what would become back-to-back titles and promotions. It's a big ask from here, but they could yet make it three.

The Baggies were the visitors on the weekend of the first-ever Sela Cup at St. James' Park, and Langley's charges duly recorded a straightforward win in front of a big home crowd.

Forward Bridget Galloway put them ahead from close range just before the break, before late efforts from Becky Ferguson and Cara Milne-Redhead added further gloss to the scoreline. It was the perfect way to prepare for another significant season.

This FA Women's National League Cup semi-final had it all; goals, drama and emotional scenes. It was also the occasion of Langley's 100th game in charge, having been appointed in 2019 when the club was a very different place.

Defender Potts headed Newcastle in front from Tyler Dodds' corner seven minutes into the second half, but Emma Jones' leveller for Pompey soon after jangled black and white nerves. They still went close through Barker and Paige Bailey-Gayle, who both hit the woodwork, but it looked as though the tie would go to extra time when the former found space on the left and picked out Gibson in the box.

"I'll never forget going back into the changing room, and Anna Soulsby was like, 'I would love to be Georgia Gibson right now'," the matchwinner recalled last year. "My phone was going wild. I had to put it on do not disturb. The media you get - 'media want you outside, media want you outside!' I had my mam and dad there - 'where are you at? We want to see you, we're absolutely buzzing for you!' The crowd were singing my name. That feeling… it never goes."

"To get from where we were six or 12 months ago to today, we've moved mountains," Langley added after that dramatic finish sent them through to the final, where they were edged out by Hashtag United. But perspective remained key. "Five years ago we were paying to play football on terrible pitches. I'm just so proud. I can't thank our fans enough."

Another Sela Cup outing for United, and against storied opposition too. Elysia Boddy's superb curling effort put the hosts in front early on, leaving goalkeeper Laura Giuliani with no chance as she found the top right-hand corner at the Leazes End, but goals from Nikola Karczewska and Valentina Cernoia had turned the game on its head by the midway point in the first half.

In the end it took a fine late finish from summer signing Amy Andrews to level the scores and force a shoot-out, with Magpies custodian Hannah Hawkins proving the difference as she kept out Marta Mascarello's spot-kick before Evelyn Ijeh struck the crossbar to hand Newcastle an impressive victory - and some pre-season silverware.

Newcastle United Women 1 Southampton Women 1

The Lasses' most recent outing at St. James' Park brought an end to their 100 per cent winning record at the stadium, but this was also their first Barclays Women's Championship fixture there after their summer promotion to the second tier.

They didn't get off to a great start, with the Saints' Freya Gregory - who is now a United player, having joined in January - pounced on some defensive hesitancy to put the visitors in front just seven minutes in. The Magpies kept going, though, and finally rescued a point in stoppage time at the end of the second half when defender Deanna Cooper bundled home in front of the Gallowgate.

With Championship points at stake once more on Sunday, and with a record crowd behind them, it could be another unforgettable occasion for those in black and white.
