Ipswich Town have made an enquiry about taking Theo Corbeanu on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the second half of the season.

The up and coming forward has gained valuable EFL experience in loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes Dons and Blackpool since the beginning of last season, looking assured for the most part in the Championship this term.

If the 20-year-old did turn up at Portman Road this month, he would enter one of the most competitive environments below the Premier League in terms of Kieran McKenna’s attacking options.

That could be good for the Canadian’s development from Wolves’ point of view, but they would have to recognise that game-time could be limited compared to alternative destinations.

What do we know so far?

Corbeanu has proven that he is a versatile player who is comfortably good enough to be playing regularly for a side targeting promotion from the third tier.

Wednesday and MK Dons came up short in the end last season, but Corbeanu had a positive impact in their respective bids.

Corbeanu has not played a senior minute since early November due to an ankle injury, and therefore there would likely be some kind of transition period, where the forward would be phased back into regular first team action.

Joining Ipswich would mean becoming a crucial part of the automatic promotion three-horse race in League One, of which the Tractor Boys are currently trailing the Owls and Plymouth Argyle in.

As things stand, this potential move has not got past the enquiry stage.

Is the transfer likely to happen?

At the moment, this transfer feels more likely not to take place and for Corbeanu to be re-deployed somewhere else instead of Suffolk.

The competition for places is too steep for the parent club to be convinced that their younger player will be trusted with enough minutes to make the move worthwhile.

There would potentially be other suitors in the Championship should Corbeanu return to full fitness, and outside of Ipswich there are a host of clubs who could guarantee regular starts for someone of the Canadian’s ability.

Geographically speaking, Ipswich would be the furthest loan spell from Wolverhampton yet, but that could also be seen as a good thing, with Wolves looking to develop Corbeanu’s mindset and better shape him to pursue a successful career in the senior game.

The Tractor Boys have stockpiled talent in certain positions, and it is hard to see how Corbeanu would nail down a starting berth.
