Blackpool are back in the Championship and having made steady progress in their first season back, they want to continue pushing on under Michael Appleton.
Having invested over the summer, the Seasiders are now eyeing an even higher place this campaign. However, they’re currently only in 19th place but have gone unbeaten in their last two outings – including an emphatic 3-1 win over Watford.
There is certainly talent in their current side then and Blackpool will have to depend on some of these names to fire them towards the right end of the table this season.
With that in mind then, here is who could go into a 5-a-side team from the current Seasiders squad.
It’s always a difficult task to whittle a squad of 20+ players down to just five key members of the team but here is how Blackpool could line up in a 5-a-side outfit.
In goal, Chris Maxwell and Daniel Grimshaw are still battling it out to be the undisputed number one. The honour was Maxwell’s in League One but upon their promotion to the second tier, it seemed Grimshaw was more suited to the task. However, with the Seasiders falling down the table and Maxwell coming back into the side, he has impressed massively in the last three games and could be the main man again going forward. Maxwell then just about takes the goalkeeping spot here.

In front of the shot-stopper is Jordan Thorniley. He might have only played in nine league games this year so far but when he has been on the field, he has been hard to get past. A rock at the back, he is a big presence in the defence and has helped Blackpool pick up points himself this campaign. He even has an assist despite being a centre-back and the 25-year-old would certainly be able to keep out the opposition in this team.
In midfield, Kenneth Dougall might be the reliable face they need in the centre of the field. He’s played in almost all of Blackpool’s league games so far this season and is able to both break up attacks and start moves for his own team. He has one assist to his name and always puts a shift in for the side in midfield – so his workrate and energy could be useful in this team.
Getting on to the more attacking elements of this team now and the on-loan Theo Corbeanu has taken his chance to replace Josh Bowler with both hands. Seasiders’ fans were likely worried when the latter left to join Nottingham Forest but Corbeanu has stepped up to the plate and been one of their most impressive players since. With three goals in 13 games and plenty of chances created, his drive and determination – and not to mention his impressive dribbling and work on the ball – could be utilised well in this 5-a-side team.
Finally, the striker to star for Blackpool in this team would be Jerry Yates. As their top goalscorer with four goals this year (and one assist) he has to be the go-to forward in this team. The 26-year-old has just over 30 goals during his Seasiders career so far and he has continued to shine in the Championship. The spearhead of their attack, he would also be the line leader in this team.
