Manchester City picked up a crucial three points with their 4-nil victory over Newcastle United yesterday. A hat trick from Omar Marmoush and a late goal for James McAtee saw Pep Guardiola’s side pick up a much-needed win. But the manner of City’s performance was what caught the eye. With the second leg of City’s UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off set to take place at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night against Real Madrid there is now hope for Pep Guardiola’s side. Overturning a 3-2 deficit will be no simple task against Carlo Ancelotti’s side. But if City can perform as they did yesterday there is hope that they can.

All parts of Manchester City’s game when they are at their best were on display yesterday. There was a crispness to City’s play when in possession. They pressed and defended well when they had to. Their performance did resemble Pep Guardiola’s side at their best. It isn’t a stretch to say it was probably Manchester City’s best performance of the season. It does give you hope that City can overturn a 3-2 deficit at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Yesterday’s performance is the one that Manchester City will have to bring to the Bernabeu. They’ll need to be calm and poised in possession. Pep Guardiola’s side will have to be strong and resolute defensively. City will also have to take their chances when they are presented to get at Real Madrid’s makeshift defence. If they bring all of that they could potentially beat the current European champions.

Following their emphatic win over Newcastle yesterday there is now hope for the week ahead for Manchester City. Sometimes it can be the hope that kills you. But there is a chance that Pep Guardiola’s side can do something spectacular based on how they played yesterday at the Etihad. The mood has now lifted surrounding the world champions and we will see what that leads to at the Bernabeu.
