Despite his club’s current form, Didier Digard is not in danger of being sacked for now.
Le Havre AC president Jean-Michel Roussier offered his assurances to the club’s head coach, even though the side from Normandy are in danger of being relegated to Ligue 2.
After 16 matchdays, they are second from the bottom, three points below a playoff spot and four behind AS Saint-Étienne and Ligue 1 safety.
Roussier tells L’Équipe that he judges his manager on a long-term basis and not strictly on what has happened lately.
“No, I don’t impose short-term goals. There is no ultimatum. I don’t work like that. And to die, I die with my ideas,” said Rousier.
There have been rumours of Digard’s sacking for some time, and his case to stay wasn’t helped by his team’s 5-1 shellacking at the hands of Olympique de Marseille on Sunday.
Following that defeat, Digard called out his players, saying, “For some, the level is too high,” implying that some players currently in the team cannot cut it in the French top flight.
Les Ciel et Marine have lost five consecutive matches across all competitions, including a 1-0 defeat against Championnat National 2 side Stade Briochin.
So far in 2024-25, Digard’s men have been particularly poor in the attacking third, netting the fewest goals in the league thus far (12).
During the club’s 3-0 loss versus RC Strasbourg, many supporters could be heard calling for Digard to resign.
Roussier, however, is standing behind the man who earned over 70 caps for this club as a player, saying the solutions must come from the players themselves.
This team survived relegation a season ago, finishing 15th in the table with 32 points. Digard was named the new manager after his predecessor, Luka Elsner, left to become the boss at Stade de Reims. The former defensive midfielder, who won the Coupe de la Ligue at Paris Saint-Germain in 2007-08, served as interim boss with Nice OGC a season ago.
