“There’s two things that should’ve happened…” – Sheffield United boss wants reaction after chucking points away vs QPR

Despite flying out of the traps on Saturday, Sheffield United surrendered their two goal lead in easy fashion and it came to nobody’s surprise when Queens Park Rangers netted the equaliser with a minute and change remaining.

The first half was fantastic to watch; there was a real zip and style about how the Blades were playing. But for whatever reason they could not get to grips with QPR in the second half and they never really looked like they ever started the second half as they struggled for control in the game.

Chris Wilder expects positive reaction from Sheffield United after QPR setback

Speaking to SUTV after the draw, Chris Wilder was disappointed that his side were unable to dictate the game, “I never thought we had control of the game even though we got off to a fabulous start. It’s a team put together so our reaction now to adversity, what’s it going to be like? I’m sure it will be a positive reaction. We’ve got to realise it’s a team that’s been put together and there will be some really good bits and there’s going to be some not so good bits that we’re going to have to get through this next six to eight weeks and bed players in.”

“The goals are poor goals, one from a set play where Blaster gets blocked and it’s a mistake for the second one, two boys have gone for it, Harrison just has to stay in his slot. I thought at times we opened them up but if you don’t put teams to bed [this can happen],” Wilder added.

Last season there were two huge issues: defending corners, and throwing points away late in the game. With over a dozen players departing through the summer you’d think that these issues may resolve with a change in identity. However, two players that have remained from last season are the centre-back duo of Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jack Robinson. Are they suffering a hangover from last season, or was Saturday just one of those games?

Wilder said after the game: “There’s two things that should have happened: we should’ve got the third goal through our quality or we should have more control of the game and we did neither. We’ll learn from it. Not the result we wanted especially after an electric 15-20 minutes at Bramall Lane. We have to get over this slight bump in the road; there’s been a lot of good things said about us and the players we’ve brought in and the performance at Preston and in the cup and it’s the first slight disappointment this season and we have to show what this new group is about.”

Although Sheffield United didn’t lose it almost felt like one given they were leading 2-0 after 15 minutes. Wilder’s men will have a chance to put it right at the weekend however as they travel to Norwich City.
