Thiago Maia is looking to make his mark on the Flamengo midfield, and is anticipating another memorable season for the Brazilian giants.
Maia was brought on in the 23rd minute of the 3-0 win over Ecuadorian side Independiente Del Valle on Wednesday, as Flamengo added the Recopa Sudamericana to their ever-burgeoning trophy cabinet.
Maia, who is on loan from French side Lille, was introduced as manager Jorge Jesus reacted to the dismissal of Willian Arão.
Speaking to Globo Esporte, Maia acknowledged the strength in depth Flamengo currently enjoys, but added that he expects to play a proper role throughout the season.
“It is very good to arrive in a prepared team,” the 22-year-old said.
“We know that everyone will have opportunities and we are managing to show on the field that the work continues to pay off.
“The group is very strong and united. On Wednesday, we were left with one player less during almost the whole game. We showed power of reaction, overcoming and focus.
“I am fulfilled for being part of this historic Flamengo. I’m sure it will be another very special year.”
The Rubro-Negro are in action on Saturday as they face Cabofriense in the opening round of the Taça Rio.
