The Rudi Garcia era began in the worst possible way. The Belgian national team lost 3-1 to Ukraine in the first leg of their Nations League Group A qualifier. Despite taking the lead through Romelu Lukaku shortly before the break, the side conceded three goals in the space of under 15 minutes during the second half.
Following the final whistle, the Red Devils record goal scorer Lukaku did not hold back. As reported by HLN, the striker said ‘This is unacceptable, it’s a mental problem’. Lukaku then went on to say that the sides mentality is like that of the generation that came just before the so called ‘Golden Generation’, on that Lukaku was at the forefront of. The sides face each other again on Sunday, with Lukaku asking for a raucous home support to help them overcome the deficit that they face.
For Garcia, this is certainly a bad start. It was widely reported that he was not the Belgian FA’s first choice to take over from Domenico Tedesco. Losing over two legs to Ukraine will only increase the scrutiny and lack of supporters trust in the decision to bring Garcia in as head coach.
