Belgian net-bulger and former keeper

His start for our Red Bulls speaks for itself! In his five appearances so far for our boys, Yorbe Vertessen has three goal contributions (two goals and one assists), with his speed, determination and trickery making an instant impression. Time to introduce the attacker, who has been with us for a little over a month, in more detail.

If history had been a little different, we may not have got to enjoy the 24-year-old in attack scoring the kind of delightful goals like his chip in the 3-1 win over Sturm Graz. The Belgian always had a big passion for football, but it took him a while in his younger years to find his favourite position. As a small boy, he enjoyed playing as goalkeeper, before his parents convinced him to try his hand as a striker. That worked a treat, with Vertessen smashing goals in throughout his youth, and being crowned top scorer of the 2018 U17 European championship.

Yorbe's talents were recognised at a very young age, with him swapping the Westerlo youth ranks in his homeland for his first overseas club, PSV Eindhoven - even if they were just 70km away from his home. He progressed through all the youth levels there to the first-team, making 102 appearances and scoring for PSV in the UEFA Champions League.

The 1.74 m striker then left for Union Berlin in the German Bundesliga, where he made 32 competitive appearances over the course of around a year. During his time in the German capital, he got to know Brenden Aaronson - making it only logical that he reached out to the American currently at Leeds United before signing for us.

Vertessen's first appearances for our boys certainly suggest it was the right move for everyone. The Belgian recently said in an interview: "I think I have found my ideal place."

We will definitely need his goal threat, mentality and speed when we go into the championship group in the coming months in the season's big final stretches!
