The Dutch international is reportedly set to join Ajax before the transfer window shuts

Former Sheffield Wednesday man Carlton Palmer believes Burnley are doing the right thing in moving Wout Weghorst on this summer.

Accordint to journalsit Sacha Tavolieri, the Dutch striker is confident of securing a move back to his homeland in the coming days, with Ajax thought to be his next destination.

The frontman has failed to live up to expectations at Turf Moor since his arrival in January 2022, with just two league goals in 22 matches since his reported £12 million move from Wolfsburg.

A number of loan moves has seen the Dutch international play for Besiktas, Manchester United and Hoffenheim over the past two years, with the Lancashire side seeing now as the perfect time to send him on his way for good.

Wout Weghorst set for Ajax move as Burnley stint comes to an end

Tavolieri took to X earlier in the week to confirm that Weghorst has been in conversations with the Eredivisie giants, with the striker said to be very confident of a deal getting over the line before the end of the month.

The move away from Turf Moor will bring an end to a disappointing spell with the Clarets, in which he has spent more time away from the club than he has in Lancashire.

With that in mind, Palmer believes the time is right to cut all ties with the Dutchman, having come off the bench in Burnley’s first two matches of the Championship season.

The former England international told FLW: “It’s believed that Wout Weghorst is closing in on a move to the giant club Ajax.

“He’s had a disappointing time at Burnley, a lot of the time he has been there he has been loaned out and not really had a lot of game time.

“He has been on the bench in the opening two games, and has come on as a sub in those opening two games, but he’s only got two years left on his contract.

“He’s 32-years-old and his move to Burnley has not really worked out for him, he spent a lot of time out on loan.

“His best loan spell was probably at Besiktas, where he played 18 times and scored nine goals with four assists, but he has not really made any real impact at Burnley.”

Scott Parker still needs to trim Burnley squad

Despite a number of players leaving the club this summer, Burnley still have the biggest squad in the Championship as it stands.

The Clarets have already seen eleven players depart the club in recent months, but still have 32 players on the books, which can only be matched by Cardiff City and Oxford United in the second tier at this moment in time.

Weghorst leaving would also help free up some finances for the season ahead, with Capology estimating that the target man is on a £35,000 weekly wage.

With plenty of competition for the forward places at Turf Moor, Palmer believes the Ajax move will be best for all involved in the coming days, with the Clarets able to turn their attention to escaping the EFL at the first opportunity.

He continued: “With the likes of Lyle Foster and Jay Rodriguez, as well as Zeki Amdouni able to play up top if needs be, Michael Obafemi is also another option to play up there, as well as summer signing Andreas Hountondji.

“So with these options in mind for Scott Parker, an exit for Weghorst would probably be the best thing for the player and the club.

“You would think at this level in the Championship he would do very well, but I think this saga needs to be put to bed, and a move to Ajax would be a potentially good move for the club financially, and better for both parties to end what has been a disappointing time.”
