Bayern Munich extended their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to eight games by beating VfB Stuttgart on Friday. The hosts took the lead midway through the first half, but Bayern responded strongly to this setback and equalized before the half-time whistle. The Bavarian club scored two goals in the second half to clinch a 3-1 victory and secure all three points.

It was not a top-class performance from Bayern, but they were able to step up during periods in the game to get the three points. Considering the game was away from home against an impressive Stuttgart side, Vincent Kompany will be pleased with the way his players reacted going down in the first half.

Bayern had several good individual performances against Stuttgart, but the following three players stood out on Friday evening.

Leon Goretzka

Bayern Munich have been trying to part ways with Leon Goretzka in the last 12 months. The German midfielder has been determined to stay in Munich and await his opportunities under Vincent Kompany. Goretzka has hardly disappointed the Belgian coach and the Bavarian faithful whenever he has been on the pitch this season.

The 30-year-old midfielder was paired with Joao Palhinha on Friday evening. He was efficient in possession, completing 94% of the passes he attempted against Stuttgart. Goretzka also worked hard out of possession, winning the ball in critical areas of the pitch. One such recovery helped Bayern to score the second goal. Goretzka won the ball in Stuttgart’s box and slotted past the goalkeeper with his left foot.

The former Schalke midfielder may not have the most expansive passing range, but he knows how to keep things ticking in the center of the park and provide a goal threat. He managed to do both things successfully against Stuttgart and helped his side get all three points.
