In a game which had no goals, it should be no surprise that a defensive action has become the defining moment.

Tosin Adarabioyo’s block not only saved us a point in that game, it also provided a neat button on his rise to first team regular as injuries have knocked out other central defenders. He spoke to Chelsea’s official website after the draw:

“[The block] is something us defenders love to do, keep clean sheets, and that was a moment to do so and put your body on the line. It was a very difficult game. Everton are one of the best teams in Europe at keeping clean sheets and we’re one of the best at scoring, but they did very well. It was a very tough game and they managed a stalemate,” the defender said.

“The conditions impacted the game, the first half was very difficult with the weather, but it was just one of those days, you have to keep going.”

The mention of the weather is interesting. We heard Robert Sanchez mention it, Enzo Maresca mention it in his press conference, and now Tosin mention it. It’s often hard to get a sense of how distracting it is from TV, but when you’re out there in the wind and rain you really see how it hurts any attacking momentum – especially when the home side is doing all it can to exacerbate that issue.

Tosin pleased with team effort

As well as his own block, Tosin was delighted with what he had seen all round from his team:

“Everybody’s fighting spirit impressed me,’ he stated. ‘We went out there to be fully focused and give a good battle against a strong Everton team. We have a lot of confidence heading into the new year. We’re having a good run at the moment, we’re full of confidence, and we just keep going.”
