Serbia have been knocked out of the FIFA World Cup following their disappointing 3-2 defeat to Switzerland, who have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.
It was a rather engaging game of football, as four goals flowed in the first half and a Remo Freuler strike in the second half proved to be the difference-maker for the Swiss outfit.
Xhaka holds the key for Switzerland
Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka didn’t have a great game against Brazil but he impressed against Cameroon and put in quite a decent performance against Serbia. Considering how his season has gone and how Switzerland lack natural ball progressors, Xhaka’s performances will be key for them.
A huge disappointment for Serbia
A bit like Denmark, Serbia have been one of the biggest disappointments in the tournament. For many, they were the dark hoses of the tournament but they could never live up to the billing and their performances lacked cohesion. A large part of it was because of the injury problems early in the tournament as well.
Embolo comes in clutch, again
Breel Embolo has been around for Switzerland for a while now and he finally seemed to come of age today, as his goal proved to be the difference-maker. He scored in the previous game against Cameroon, but his goal against Serbia could provide him the momentum to go on and become their vital goalscorer.
