Rotherham United are keen on signing Mallik Wilks, and Carlton Palmer believes now is the time for Sheffield Wednesday to offload him.

Sheffield Wednesday started their 2024/25 Championship campaign fantastically.

Goals from Jamal Lowe, Josh Windass and Michael Smith, as well as an own goal, meant that the Owls picked up an outstanding 4-0 victory on the opening day of the season at home to Wayne Rooney's Plymouth Argyle.

Danny Rohl has given the Sheffield Wednesday faithful something to be excited about and there is now huge optimism regarding the season that lies ahead.

It has been a busy summer for the club as Rohl looks to build a squad capable of competing in the top half of the Championship.

Probably their most notable bit of business was securing last season's star man, Ike Ugbo, on a permanent transfer.

Their opening day victory over Plymouth was without Ugbo even being in the squad, so the optimism will only increase when he returns.

One player that does not look to be a part of Rohl's plans this season is forward, Mallik Wilks. The 25-year-old has played very little football over the last year, having made just one league start for the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign, so his future at Hillsborough looks bleak.

It now looks as though Rotherham United are ready to take him off the Owls' hands, which is a move that could suit all parties.

Rotherham United interested in Mallik Wilks

Over the weekend (10th August), Football Insider revealed that Rotherham United are in talks to sign Mallik Wilks from Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Rotherham boss, Steve Evans, recently confirmed the claims in an interview, but stated that there "seems to be a breakdown in communications".

The Millers got off to a rough start in League One this weekend, falling to defeat against Exeter City on opening day, so they will be keen to strengthen even further.

Wilks was in the Leeds United academy when Evans was in charge at Elland Road, and now the pair could be set to work with each other at Rotherham.

Although the 25-year-old has failed to kick on in the Championship, his previous records in League One suggest this would be a superb move for the Millers.

Carlton Palmer suggests that Sheffield Wednesday should sell Wilks this summer

Sheffield Wednesday are set for a huge campaign in the Championship, and looking at the forwards that they now have at their disposal, Mallik Wilks will likely receive no game time at Hillsborough this season.

Former Sheffield Wednesday star and current pundit, Carlton Palmer, recently claimed that now is the time for the Owls to offload the 25-year-old.

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Palmer said "Mallik has had a disappointing time. He came with high expectations to Sheffield Wednesday, but it would be fair to say it hasn't worked out for Mallik and I think it's time for him to move on."

"Rotherham and the manager, Steve Evans, have said they've been waiting for an answer from Sheffield Wednesday, but I think Sheffield Wednesday were just waiting to see what would happen with [Ike] Ugbo."

"Obviously, they're in talks with two players who may leave the football club now, with Mallik being one of them, and the other player is Michael Smith, so of course that would leave room for Danny Rohl to bring in another player."

"There were question marks about him in the Championship. Yes, we know what he can do in League One, and he has not lived up to the billing, so time for Sheffield Wednesday to move him on."

"For Rotherham, and a manager like Evans, he'll probably get the best out of Mallik Wilks in that league. I think in that league, like we've said before, he does a very good job and will help them to get promotion. Evans, whether you like him or not as a manager and a person, that's what he does, he gets clubs promoted."
