2024/25 Serie A, matchday 25. The programme features AC Milan v Hellas Verona, a match full of unforgettable precedents and stories to tell. On 5 May 2018, the Rossoneri, led by coach Gattuso, hosted Hellas Verona on matchday 36 of the season. The Milanese team had no particular ambitions in terms of the league table, unlike their opponents, for whom the match at San Siro represented their last chance to remain in the top flight. It was a cracker of a match between the Rossoneri and the Gialloblù, won 4-1 by the Diavolo with four different players on the scoresheet. Let's revisit it together with our Time Machine.
AC Milan's 2017/18 season was characterised by ups and downs, with Gennaro Gattuso taking over the Rossoneri bench from Vincenzo Montella on matchday 14 after an uphill start. The change of management had paid off, particularly in the second half of the season, which began with a run of ten consecutive wins and ended on a high. When the match against Hellas Verona, the third to last of the season, came around, the team's position was already clear but there was no lack of desire to finish well and to prepare well for the Coppa Italia Final. Moreover, the 3-0 defeat earlier in the season cried out for revenge, as did the 1-0 home defeat to Benevento in the last match in front of our fans. It was a 4-3-3 starting formation: Abate, Bonucci, Romagnoli and Rodríguez in front of Donnarumma; Kessié, Locatelli and Bonaventura in the midfield; Suso, Cutrone and Çalhanoğlu in the attack.
AC Milan were are aggressive from the very start. Suso challenged Silvestri at the start and after 10 minutes, he linked up with Çalhanoğlu for the lead, a low shot by the Turk that Hertaux can't keep out, 1-0. A little while later the same thing happened, this time the assist was from Abate and Çalhanoğlu only just missed the far post. In the 32nd minute, the second goal arrived: Bonaventura found Cutrone in the area, and the number 63 shot it past Silvestri at the near post. The Rossoneri didn't slow down and scored a third goal at the beginning of the second half. In the 49th minute, Abate exchanged passes with Suso and scored a great goal with the outside of his right foot, powerful and precise, making it 3-0. Silvestri saved a shot from Locatelli, Romulo hit the crossbar with a free kick before Lee scored the 3-1 goal with a shot from the edge of the box in the 83rd minute. In the final minutes, there was still time for a fourth goal. Bonaventura made a cross from the right, Borini controlled it and shot it into the corner of the net. The final score was 4-1, the Diavolo celebrated, while Hellas knew that relegation to Serie B was now mathematically certain.
