Carletto, we miss you so much. It’s been almost two years already since the legendary Carlo Mazzone passed away. He coached all around the Italian peninsula for 38 years, always leaving a mark for his genuineness, grouchiness, and his kind heart.
A genuine character who always stayed true to himself while the world of calcio kept getting faker and glossier, Mazzone was survived by his antics and anecdotes, which calcio fans still recount with pleasure regardless of their football faith.
Among those, there is one famous exchange with his player Amedeo Carboni, a veteran defender who would eventually close his career at Valencia. Carboni was a “pioneer” of his kind, one of the first Italian players to play abroad in an age when the Serie A was the football El Dorado and there would seem to be no reason for a home player to leave it.
This dialogue, which has become the stuff of calcio pop-culture legend, happened while Mazzone was coaching Roma, having fulfilled his childhood dream. Indeed, Sor Carletto was born and raised in the Italian capital and was a Giallorosso at heart.
On March 19, 1995, with Roma ahead 1-0 away at Cagliari and in a desperate need to defend their slim lead, Mazzone noticed that his left back Carboni kept pushing forward and joining the front line. Since Carboni was not exactly Theo Hernandez, Mazzone finally lost it and shouted at him:
“Amedeo, how many games have you played in Serie A?”
Carboni looked puzzled, still he replied: “Three-hundred-and-fifty, coach…”
And Mazzone: “Cool, and how many goals have you scored?”
“Four, coach” was Carboni’s answer, to which Carletto snapped back:
