Ruhr Nachrichten reports that Borussia Dortmund left-back Tom Rothe is on his way to Berlin ahead of a transfer to fellow Bundesliga side Union Berlin.
The transfer fee for the left-back is said to be around €5m and Dortmund have also secured a buy-back option in the deal. Since returning to Dortmund in the summer, Rothe expressed his desire to leave the club permanently, the summer arrival of Yan Couto also meant that Rothe had dropped down the pecking order.
The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Holstein Kiel, where he played all but one game in the 2.Bundesliga, scoring four and providing seven assists as Kiel gain promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history.
Rothe’s arrival in Köpenick could be preparing for the potential departure of Robin Gosens who has been linked with a return to Italy. This move is also unlikely to affect Union’s pursuit of Bochum defender Bernardo, who is versatile enough to play either as a central defender or a left-back.
