Real Salt Lake (RSL) goalkeeper Tomás Gómez has officially parted ways with the team after the conclusion of the 2024 season, the team announced today. The 31-year-old has made just a handful of appearances for the senior squad after joining from the Claret and Cobalt in 2014. RSL made roster decisions involving multiple players as it prepares for 2025, and his departure is part of that.

Tenure Defined by Depth and Professionalism

Gómez joined RSL in 2022 with USL Championship experience with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Sacramento Republic FC, scoring twice as the club was named USL Goalkeeper of the Year twice. Gómez’s pedigree notwithstanding, he was mostly a depth option behind proven standbys such as Zac MacMath and resurgent prospect Gavin Beavers. He wasn’t used at all in MLS regular season during over three seasons, but made some appearances for RSL’s reserve side, Real Monarchs, and friendlies.

Gómez’s best times were when he was in the MLS NEXT Pro league and gave guidance to young players. RSL coaches including Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni drew the professionalism and work ethic.

RSL’s Vision for 2025

RSL's Chief Soccer Officer Kurt Schmid announced that Gómez’s departure was part of a series of roster changes. Veteran defender Marcelo Silva and midfielder Maikel Chang also saw their contracts expire, alongside Gómez. RSL also declined options on other players, casting another vote toward youth and strategic acquisitions.

For the upcoming 2025 season, RSL will lean on its two returning goalkeepers: Al-Sepahi started alongside veteran Zac MacMath and promising homegrown talent Gavin Beavers. His option was exercised for 2025 and beavers should compete for more playing time moving forward, while the club seems committed to developing it’s ave graduates.

A Look Ahead for Gómez

Gómez comes to SAFC as a free agent, having acquired a wealth of experience, leadership and history of success in the USL Championship. He is expected to be a popular option for teams in the market for a veteran backup or veteran foster parent for younger keepers. At 31, Gómez is one of the prime years for a goalkeeper and there is plenty of room to play overseas in the US or even in Major League Soccer or USL.

RSL’s 2024 Achievements and Future Goals

RSL closed out the 2024 slate with one of the most successful campaigns in franchise history, finishing fourth with 59 points and third place on the road to 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup. While the club were left just short of MLS Cup Playoffs progression, the fact remains the strength of the team signifies ambition from its management to keep going. And with the likes of Diego Luna, Chicho Arango and Braian Ojeda under contract and a blend of seasoned veterans and exciting young talent, RSL is poised to race to the top in 2025.
