Sandro Tonali admits he thinks about returning to Milan one day, but it’s not the first thing he has in mind and insists he never discussed joining Juventus in the January window.

The Italian midfielder released an interview with Repubblica newspaper U, and its full version will be released on Friday.

However, Italian sources, including TMW, have already published part of Tonali’s quotes from the magazine.

Tonali, a long-time Milan fan, left the Rossoneri to join Newcastle in a deal believed to be worth around €80m in 2023. He was seen as a potential Milan captain, so does his move to the Premier League mean there are no more bandiere (club legends) in Italian football?

“It’s difficult; you can’t decide on your own. It’s a world with a lot of money involved for the players and for the clubs,” Tonali replied.

“When you say no, the club also has to say no. In negotiations, it’s rare to have two no’s or two yes’s. There’s always one yes and one no. In big clubs, with so much money at stake, being a one-club man becomes a utopia. On the one hand, I took something away with my transfer, but on the other hand, I gave something back, helping Milan balance their books.

“I’ve grown, discovered a new country, a new style of football, and a new language. I have no regrets,” the Italian midfielder continued.

“The idea of returning to Milan one day is there, but it’s not the first thing on my mind when I wake up in the morning.”

There were reports that Juventus were interested in signing Tonali during the January transfer window, but the ex-Milan star admitted there was never a concrete negotiation with the Bianconeri.

“My agents and I have never even talked about it,” he said.

“And I know from experience that if you don’t reach that stage, there’s nothing concrete. Besides, I feel good here. I’ve found my path, and there’s no need to disrupt it again. I want to win for Newcastle fans; soon, we’ll have our first chance at Wembley.”

Tonali’s agent recently discussed the midfielder’s future, saying that Serie A clubs can no longer afford his client.
