Top source confirms two positions Chelsea will look to strengthen this summer – and one they won’t

Fabrizio Romano’s column for GiveMeSport yesterday made it very clear that Enzo Maresca is staying as Chelsea, manager, no matter the results.

The sources he was speaking to were definitely trying to remove any doubt that the club would move on from the Italian, and part of the evidence for that was the fact that they’ve already started involving him in talks about this summer’s transfer plans.

What might those summer plans be? Well, Romano focuses on two positions we know the club tried and failed to resolve in January – up front and on the left wing.

The search for an alternative to Nicolas Jackson is now 18 months deep, with the Blues yet to pull the trigger on anyone. Romano says they didn’t buy anyone in January because “they didn’t find the right profile available,” which was ultimately the same story as last summer. Eventually, they’ll have to pull the trigger.

Left winger still wanted – but goalkeeper not mentioned

Also on their agenda is a left winger – names like Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens have been mentioned a lot, but the sporting directors decided to keep their powder dry in this department too:

“Chelsea want to give Maresca one more player on the wing, especially after Joao Felix’s loan exit and Mykhaylo Mudryk being not available,” Romano writes.

“Also in this case, part of the summer plans with the manager being involved [in any final decision].”

There’s no mention of interest in a new goalkeeper, perhaps adding weight to the Daily Mail’s claims from last week that we will be moving ahead with the players already on our books and not aiming to buy a new stopper, despite our ongoing struggles to find a consistent number one in that position.
