Toronto FC wing-back Richie Laryea has undergone surgery to repair a hamstring problem that was sustained early on in the 2024 MLS campaign.
Laryea joined the Canadian side this offseason after spending the second half of last season on loan at Vancouver Whitecaps from Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest. Prior to his time in western Canada, Laryea enjoyed three years with Toronto from March 2019 January 2022 before returning on loan spell from August 2022 to July 2023.
Vancouver were unable to agree to a permanent deal with Forest this offseason, which saw Laryea return to TFC for a third spell but on a permanent basis. The versatile player started just one match this season, playing 70 minutes on Matchday 1 in Toronto's 0-0 draw at FC Cincinnati.
The former Orlando City player was deployed as a left wing-back in first-year head coach John Herdman's 3-4-2-1 system, with Federico Bernardeschi on the opposite side of him. With Laryea expected to miss roughly three months, Herdman might look to call on Nickseon Gomis as the 22-year-old has already taken up shop at left wing-back in recent games.
Toronto return to action this Saturday to play host to Atlanta United, looking to win their third game of the season and remain near the top of the Eastern Conference table.
