The defeder was forced off during the first half of Saturday’s 2-0 win at Anfield with a suspected hamstring injury. After receiving treatment on the pitch for a few minutes, it was decided that Alexander-Arnold would not continue and he was replaced by Conor Bradley.

Asked after the game for an update, Slot told reporters: “It's difficult to say how serious it is. But it's always serious when a player goes off in the first half. It's not a good sign, but it's so difficult after the game to tell you what it is.”

Alexander-Arnold was last week named in interim England manager Lee Carsley's final squad for the upcoming Nations League games, but Slot expects the player to withdraw.

Slot added: “I would be surprised to see him playing for the England national team.”
