It does appear that Manchester City could be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer. Ederson could leave the club in the summer and Stefan Ortega isn’t a certainty to remain at the club either. In an interview published in the Daily Mail reporter Jack Gaughan believes City will be in the market for a keeper this summer. With that in mind here are two young keepers that could step into the void left by either Ederson or Stefan Ortega’s potential departures from Manchester City this summer.
Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has been named in a report from Graeme Bailey which was relayed by Lucas Arnold for TBR Football as a young keeper that has caught Manchester City’s eye. It is easy to see why when you analyse Garcia as a keeper.
Joan Garcia is a superb young keeper known for his quick reflexes and poise in goal. He particularly shines in one-on-one situations which is an attribute that could appeal to the Manchester City hierarchy. Based on the high defensive line Pep Guardiola’s side employs Garcia’s ability to make a crucial save could slot into the City set up. Joan Garcia has been one of, if not, the standout keeper in La Liga this season. His shot-stopping ability does stand out as emphasised by the statistic below.
Joan Garcia is also superb with the ball at his feet. That is a prerequisite skill for any goalkeeper Manchester City could sign. Watching Garcia playing for Espanyol he thrives playing short balls and can play medium to long balls in a capable fashion. The young Spanish keeper is also calm on the ball and there is an Ederson-esque quality to his poise in possession and passing ability. Joan Garcia should be near the top of the list of goalkeepers Manchester City look to sign in the summer.
The second keeper that could step into Pep Guardiola’s squad is Lille keeper Lucas Chevalier. Chevalier has impressed for Lille once again this season and he is one of the more impressive young keepers in European football.
It must said that Chevalier isn’t as adept with the ball at his feet as Joan Garcia. But he is no slouch in that department also. He is tidy with the ball at his feet and composed and he can also play a quality long ball. But looking at Joan Garcia and Lucas Chevalier you’d likely say that Garcia is slightly better in possession.
But where Chevalier excels as a keeper is with his shot-stopping. He is a superb young keeper and his ability to make saves stands out whenever you see him play. Chevalier also commands the Lille penalty area, and his all-around keeping ability is impressive. The clip below illustrates this point and is a good snapshot of Lucas Chevalier as a keeper.
It does seem that Manchester City will be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer. Joan Garcia and Lucas Chevalier do appear to be two standout candidates for the role. They are both quality young keepers now and have their best years ahead of them. Either one of them would be a fine addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad, but you do feel that there will be a race to sign Joan Garcia or Lucas Chevalier this summer. If City are in the market for a keeper you do expect that they’ll be in the race to sign either of Garcia or Chevalier if they are deemed the goalkeeper Manchester City want to fill a void that may appear this summer.
