Summer signing Gianluca Scamacca scored his first goal for West Ham as they beat Danish side Viborg in the first leg of their Europa Conference playoff.
Scorers: Scamacca 23′, Bowen 64′, Antonio 78′; Jensen 69′.
The Italian striker, a €40m arrival from Serie A side Sassuolo, got off the mark in a Hammers shirt 23 minutes into the game at the London Stadium.
Maxwel Cornet, another new arrival, turned his maker on the flank before whipping a cross onto the head of Scamacca to power David Moyes’ side ahead.
Proceedings got better midway through the second half through the brilliance of Jarrod Bowen, who cut inside from the right flank and produced an exquisite finish into the bottom corner from outside of the area.
West Ham fans then welcomed defender Thilo Kehrer into the fray but within minutes Tiborg pulled a goal back through Jakob Bonde Jensen.
But the hosts will go into the second leg next Thursday with a two-goal cushion after Michail Antonio came off the bench to turn home Saïd Benrahma’s cross.
