This comes after a pair of spot-kicks were awarded.

The first was given the way of Arsenal, with Bukayo Saka having seen his soft effort easily kept out by Thibaut Courtois.

The latter, meanwhile, went the way of Real Madrid, after Kylian Mbappé went to ground under contact on the part of Gunners standout Declan Rice.

Following a lengthy VAR check, however, it was ultimately concluded that the contact was not sufficient to send Mbappé over, with the decision therefore overturned.

And as alluded to above, an official explanation for as much has since been provided.

As per a statement released on the part of European football’s governing body, UEFA:

“The penalty for Real Madrid has been taken away due to a non-foul by Declan Rice.”
