Manchester United have a brilliant opportunity to sign one of Spain’s best players next month.
The Red Devils have had a difficult first half of the Premier League season. They suffered their eighth defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day.
The club lacked a cutting edge in the final third and manager Ruben Amorim may want a new forward in the winter transfer window to turn the club’s fortunes around.
Due to financial concerns, the hierarchy are unlikely to back the Portuguese tactician with a big budget, but United could still make one of the best signings of the transfer window.
Dani Olmo was signed by Barcelona for £51 million from RB Leipzig last summer, but they only managed to register him with La Liga until December 31.
La Liga have refused to extend his registration until the Blaugrana recover more funds to settle some of their debts. The Catalan outfit are now in a precarious situation.
The Commercial Court 10 of Barcelona has today ruled that the Blaugrana won’t be allowed to re-register Olmo. The club will have another hearing against La Liga in a local court on December 30.
If things don’t go their way, Olmo could depart as a free agent at the beginning of next year. United should grab the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer.
The Spaniard has been linked with several Premier League clubs. He has been on United’s radar, and the club should consider an approach if Barcelona can’t register him.
Olmo would perfectly fit into the manager’s formation with two attacking midfielders. He can also play up front or as one of the wide attacking players.
His knack for creating chances would make him a dream partner alongside Bruno Fernandes.
Olmo, who RB Leipzig managing director Marcel Schafer described as ‘exceptional‘, would be a game-changer for United as he has similar attributes to Fernandes.
He works hard for the team, with or without possession. He likes to high-press his opponents.
The only concern remains his injury record. He has been sidelined for an average of 20 games in the last three seasons and spent some time out earlier this term.
This may not be a big problem for United on a free transfer. If Olmo does not consider the move, the Red Devils should propose a loan deal until the end of the season.
