It’s your friendly neighborhood Qooligan who composed this on the late shift still buzzin’ after the USL bombshell news that just dropped.

What also dropped were all the results from today’s U.S. Open Cup opening day fixtures. So here we go!

OneFootball Videos

Hartford Athletic 3 – 0 New York Shockers

Well someone got this wrong. Sorry, Josep, you couldn’t pick a carrot out of a basket of fruit.

Miami FC 4 – 1 Naples United FC

You’re zero for two, Josep buddy. Sucks to be you.

New Jersey Alliance FC 2 (2) – 2 (4) Chattanooga Red Wolves

This one goes down as the banger fixture of the day. Red Wolves midfielder Gharett Morris got a straight red in the 36th minute, forcing his team to play shorthanded. Jersey scored first in the first half stoppage off the counter, Marlon Preciado with the score. But Wolves get a break with a PK in the 64th, converted by Matt Bentley. They shock the hosts by going up 2 – 1 in the 84th after Bentley again finds the net. It looked over, but Preciado had one last trick up his sleeve, slipping a ball into Joel Quist who strikes it home and forces extra time! When that did not yield a winner, we headed to the spot, where Chattanooga put on a clinic. They drained all their shots, while Jersey lifted one over the bar and had another saved to put them out of the competition.

Sarasota Paradise 1 – 2 FC Naples

Sararsota will be kicking themselves, as they had a 68th minute penalty kick saved by Naples keeper Edward Delgado. It turned out to be the deciding factor in this match.

Asheville City SC 0 (3) – 0 (4) Greenville Triumph

I agree with Josep on this one… it would have been heartwarming to see Asheville go on to make a run in the Cup. But, alas, it was not to be, though they should be lauded for holding higher tier Greenville to no goals and forcing the shootout.

FC Motown 0 – 1 Westchester SC

Let’s give a shout to Motown keeper Joshua Schaffer who had five saves on the night to keep the scoreline close. Ultimately he could not keep out the 81st minute penalty converted by Juan Carlos Obregón.

West Chester 2 – 3 Loudoun United FC

I gotta say, my eyebrows flexed mightily when I saw this score. All I can say is that Loudoun needs to buy keeper Hugo Fauroux a beer. Or five. One each for the number of saves he made tonight. Well done West Chester for keeping Loudoun honest and making them earn it!

Texoma FC 1 – 2 Foro SC

Our only giant killing of the day as the UPSL’s Foro SC upsets USL-1’s Texoma. This was a down-n-dirty straight-up Texas no-hold ‘em brawl. You could tell with two red cards in the first half, one for each side. Then they decided to play some soccer. Well not really, as Foro had already scored in the 15th minute. In any event, the game went into extra time, and a 99th minute PK from Brayan Padilla proved to be the difference.

Tulsa Athletic 0 – 1 FC Tulsa

This local derby didn’t quite produce the fireworks I was expecting, though Athletic defender Gustavo Vargas did see two yellows to get him an early trip to the showers. Ultimately, it was a late penalty for FC Tulsa scored by Taylor Calheira that advanced them.

AV Alta FC 3 – 1 Ventura County Fusion

The most shocking thing about this game… no cards. So rare.

Ventura County FC 7 – 0 Laguna United FC

Gulp. What a beatdown. Maybe LA Galaxy should pull some of these kids to make their first team better (Ventura County FC is an affiliate club playing in MLS Next Pro).
