CALI, Colombia – The United States fell 1-nil against Korea DPR in the semifinals of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Wednesday at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia.
Coming off an equalizing effort in stoppage time followed by a win on penalties against Germany, the U.S. sought to keep the energy from their comeback in the quarterfinals.
Jordyn Bugg started the U.S. offense in the 11’ with a long-range shot going wide of the left post.
Korea DPR obtained the opening goal in the 22’ from the feet of the team’s top scorer Choe Il Son, who scored her fifth goal of the tournament. Il Son shot in the box to strike the lone goal of the encounter against U.S. goalkeeper Teagan Wy.
Wy was a top figure for the North Americans in the match, denying Jon Ryong-Jong the second goal for Korea DPR in the 62’.
Emeri Adames tried to pull one back from a corner kick play in the 79’, but Korea DPR defender Kim Song Ok denied her efforts.
Pietra Tordin tried to even out the score in the 76’ with a right shot from inside the penalty area. Tordin also had the last chance to score for the United States in the 90 '+3’ but was stopped by the Korean defense just outside the box.
The U.S. will conclude the tournament by playing in the third-place match against the losing semifinalists between Japan and the Netherlands on Saturday at Estadio Nemesio Camacho 'El Campin' in Bogotá, Colombia.
