USWNT set friendly attendance record in SheBelieves Cup triumph over Japan | OneFootball

The US women's national team set a new attendance record for a domestic friendly with over 50,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in their 2-1 triumph over Japan in the SheBelieves Cup.

Exactly 50,644 spectators were in attendance to watch the Stars and Stripes advance to the final of the 2024 SheBelieves Cup. Japan's Kiko Seike opened the scoring inside the first minute of action in the USWNT's return to Atlanta, Georgia, but Jaedyn Shaw leveled things up 20 minutes later with the two teams knotted up at one apiece at the interval.

Lindsey Horan, who has 145 caps for the USA, converted a penalty attempt in the 77th minute that was enough to see the Stars and Stripes hold off Japan. Not only did the Saturday afternoon clash set a new friendly attendance record for the USWNT, but it was also the highest-attended USWNT home match since 1999, when the US toppled China in the Women's World Cup final in penalties 5-4 to lift their second title.

The attendance for the 1999 World Cup final was over a staggering 90,000 people at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The USWNT will hope to get back to their glory days that saw them lift back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019 with the appointment of current Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes, who has guided the Blues to six Women's Super League titles.

Hayes is set to leave her current post to become the newest USWNT boss at the end of the season to begin preparations for the 2024 Olympics.

The USA return to action on April 9 to square off with their northern neighbors Canada in the final of the SheBelieves Cup at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio.
