The Women’s Champions League quarter-finals are underway Tuesday evening as Ajax hosted Chelsea and Lyon travel to play Benfica in the first-legs. Here is what happened at the two grounds.
Scorers: Faria 43 ; Cascarino 64′, Däbritz 83′
Lyon turned around a deficit to take a first-leg lead back to France.
It was one-way traffic for Lyon in the early going, as the French side dominated the ball, probing the Benfica backline.
The visitors were stunned before the half-time break however, as Andreia Faria snatched the lead for Benfica to grab the advantage in the tie.
Lyon fought their way back into the game however, pulling the tie level through Delphine Cascarino just past the hour-mark.
Sara Däbritz put the visitors ahead in the dying minutes to give Lyon a lead that they can take back to France for the second-leg.
Scorers: James 19′, Nüsken 45+2′, 83′
It was the perfect start for the visitors from London, despite the two sides trading spells of possession.
The Blues snatched lead through Lauren James, a goal given after a VAR check for offside revealed that James only picked up the ball after it was touched by an Ajax player.
James’ opener was followed up by Sjoeke Nüsken, who bagged Chelsea’s second in the dying moments of the first-half.
Emma Hayes’ side found it easy after the break, and another Nüsken strike in the final 10 minutes of the match ensured the Blues take an almost unassailable lead back to London.
