Though brief, the statement would be precisely what supporters would have wanted to hear on a Friday night ahead of weekend action as the Whitecaps take their Western Conference table-topping efforts into a clash against the visiting Colorado Rapids.

"We can confirm that Whitecaps FC is currently in discussion with the City of Vancouver regarding the construction of a stadium at the PNE fairgrounds site," the statement read.

"The club’s ownership has always been clear on their goal of constructing a purpose-built stadium and the importance of a suitable venue to both fan experience and financial performance for any professional sports franchise."

"We look forward to continuing our constructive engagement with the City and appreciate the City’s continued support for Vancouver’s thriving soccer community."

The Whitecaps, who are currently up for sale, occupy the 54,500-seat BC Place, with just 22,120 seats in use for MLS fixtures.

With the majority of MLS clubs sporting a soccer-specific stadium of their own, this news signals the club's ever-growing ambitions.
