Ange Postecglou has defended Vicario after the goalkeeper came under criticism from some Spurs fans due to an interaction he was involved in after the defeat to AZ Alkmaar.
Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie against Alkmaar, and after the game Vicario was seen trying to encourage fans to get behind the team, prompting criticism on social media.
Postecoglou said: “Vic is very, very passionate about this football club. He is very passionate about what we are trying to do here. He wants to win and he wants everyone on board with that.
“If people think there is one bad or vindictive bone in Vicario’s make-up then they don’t know the man that I do. The guy is one of the purest human beings you could ever come across. Whatever he does, he thinks is best for the team, and best for this football club because he really cares.”
Fans in the stadium were complaining because of a performance that really should have led to Alkmaar taking a bigger advantage to London next week. “We didn’t perform the way we wanted to and needed to,” Postecoglou continued.
“We’re disappointed, I’m disappointed, the players are disappointed. The tie is not over though and we get a chance to focus on that after the weekend’s game, because that becomes the priority now.”
The Lilywhites take on Bournemouth on Sunday, and Postecoglou was full of praise for Andoni Iraola’s side: “They’ve been really good, they were good last year too. Andoni has a really distinct way of playing, they’re really aggressive with their football, both with and without the ball.
“They’ve got some very good players who are developing under them. It’s a good challenge and for us a real clear objective that we need to play well if we want to get the result that we want.”
