Estevao Willian’s inspired his Palmeiras team to a 1-0 win over Gremio last night with a second half goal to keep the “Big Green” within 3 points of Botafogo at the top of the Brazilian Serie A.
That goal makes him the division’s top scorer. He was already the top assist maker. He’s still 17, if you were wondering. He’s breaking records set by Neymar, and he’s still got 6 months left in his home country to do more damage.
Those aren’t just great numbers, those are generational numbers. When Chelsea confirmed his signing, we were expecting to have to calm expectations – development isn’t linear, as we always hear repeated, and after such a brilliant start, it was only natural he would have difficult periods.
Estevao Willian scores for Palmeiras again.
Well if he is going to have one, it hasn’t come around yet. If anything, he’s gone to a new level since the day it was confirmed Chelsea would be his next destination. Watching the highlights from the game, it’s not just incredible the talent Willian has in dribbling and striking the ball, it’s also his intelligence and leadership which stands out. Needing a goal to keep their title hopes alive, a team of veterans turned to a teenager time and again to make things happen – and he did.
Battered and fouled constantly by a Gremio team who didn’t know how to handle him, especially in the second period, Willian didn’t look to the ref or think “I don’t need this, I’ve got my big move lined up already,” he just kept digging deeper until he got his reward.
After setting up teammates countless times, the youngster eventually took matters into his own hands and was ready and waiting for a spilled shot.
